luzme the ebook search site review cover

With the many different stores out there it can be hard to find the best deal on an ebook you want to read. You could go the brute force way and first visit the Amazon store. Followed by the Kobo store, Barnes & Nobles, etc. The list could go on, before you know it you spent an hour comparing prices for 1 book.

Luckily there is a great website to compare the prices of ebooks and find the cheapest store to buy your new ebook! Let me introduce you to Luzme.

Luzme

Luzme is a price comparison site where you can enter your book, author or ISBN number and have a comparison of prices between the major ebook stores.

Home page of luzme. With search field for books.

There are 2 ways of using the site:

  1. Fill in your book name inside the input field in the middle of the page and compare prices.
  2. Create an account and create watchlists that notify you if prices of books would change.

When comparing prices the defaults are set to the UK stores. That’s a good thing as from experience I found out that the UK ebook stores have the cheapest prices. I would advise against using the watchlist method. Having a pile (well in ebooks a folder) of many books that you will never touch is demotivating. As well as more expensive than not buying the book in the first place. Discounts are great but only for books you want to read.

If you don’t want to use any website to compare prices, I recommend browsing books on the UK Amazon store. There is a considerable difference between the US / UK Amazon store. It has to do with the perceived value that Americans don’t mind spending a bit more for ebooks than their UK counterparts. An old but interesting article explains this. The Kobo, Apple and google book stores are generally a little more expensive. I would only use them if you like the convenience of having the book synced to your respective ebook reader.

The Amazon UK store has the cheapest prices when it comes to ebooks.

But wait what about DRM?

Yeah, I hear you, buying books on the Amazon store cannot be loaded on a Kobo or vice versa. So it is useless to compare prices if you only own 1 device. Well also for this there is a solution. In this post i will not go into the details on how to remove DRM protection for your ebooks. This great post on medium is a great guide on removing DRM with calibre (completely free).
